The moment has arrived—you’ve prepared, planned, and taken the leap into full-time RV living. Now, it’s time to embrace the adventure and discover what it truly means to live on the road.
In this series, “RV Life Without the RV: Your Step-by-Step Guide to Preparing for Full Time RV Living,” we’ve covered every step of the journey, from deciding if RV life is right for you (Part 1) to learning the logistics of RV living (Part 7) and taking your first steps into this lifestyle (Part 8).
In this final installment, we’ll explore what to expect on the road—the joys, the challenges, and tips for thriving as an RVer.
Embracing the RV Lifestyle: What to Expect on the Road
Full-time RV living is more than a lifestyle—it’s a mindset. It’s about embracing freedom, staying flexible, and finding joy in the simple pleasures of life. This last article will give a broad overview of RV life. Each of our experiences is unique, so be sure to grab content that speaks to you, and fill in the blanks in your own way.
Here’s what you can expect as you settle into life on the road.
The Joys of RV Living
Freedom
One of the biggest joys of RV living is the freedom to go wherever your heart desires. For example, you might choose to travel to a quiet mountain retreat where you can enjoy the serenity of nature, or a bustling beachside town filled with vibrant culture and activities. The world is your backyard.
Adventure
Every day on the road is an opportunity for adventure. You’ll discover new places, meet interesting people, and create memories that last a lifetime.
I enjoy exploring National Parks and have collected pins from 40 parks. Goals can make trips fun, like driving the length of US 89 or Route 66, visiting historical theaters, or tasting local brews (without driving).
Connection to Nature
Living in an RV offers stunning sunrises, starry nights, and nature’s beauty. Occasionally, you’ll stay in RV parks for events or repairs. Balance exploration with necessary tasks.
Minimalism
With fewer belongings and distractions, RV living encourages you to focus on what truly matters—experiences, relationships, and personal growth.
The Challenges of RV Living
Limited Space
Adjusting to a smaller living space can take time. Organization and minimalism are key to making the most of your RV. For instance, consider using multi-purpose furniture, like a table that doubles as storage or a sofa that converts into a bed. Additionally, vertical storage solutions, such as shelves and hooks, can help maximize space. Finally, keep only essential items and practice regular decluttering to maintain a comfortable and functional living environment.
Maintenance
Your RV is your home, and like any home, it requires regular maintenance. From minor repairs to routine upkeep, it’s important to stay on top of your RV’s needs. Sometimes this requires some extra planning.
For example, as I am writing this, we have reservations in a campground where we can de-oxidize and wax our RV. We choose to do it ourselves to save hundreds of dollars. But it can’t be done in an RV resort or out boondocking without electricity and an ample water supply.
Loneliness or Isolation
While RV life offers freedom, it can also feel isolating at times. Building a support network and staying connected to loved ones can help. Here are some examples of how to stay connected:
- Virtual Gatherings: Schedule regular video calls with family and friends using tools like Zoom or Skype. Virtual dinners, game nights, or simply chatting can bridge the distance.
- Social Media: Keep your loved ones updated with your adventures by sharing photos and stories on social platforms. These updates can spark conversations and maintain a sense of closeness.
- Letters and Postcards: Send handwritten letters or postcards from your travels. A tangible piece of communication can be a cherished keepsake for those back home.
- Travel Visits: Plan visits to see family and friends during your travels. Set aside time to park your RV and spend quality time with loved ones. You need to schedule this in or time can get away from you.
- Shared Activities: Engage in shared activities like online book clubs, fitness challenges, or cooking the same recipe and sharing the experience via video calls.
Unexpected Events
Breakdowns, bad weather, or last-minute plan changes are all part of life on the road. Flexibility and problem-solving skills will go a long way in navigating these challenges.
In the past 25 years, we have had some big detours from our plans. Leaving the northwest one time, we found ourselves caught between two major snowstorms, so we had to change our route and keep moving until we were clear. I don’t know how many times we have driven through tornado alley and were passed by those storm chaser vehicles! That can be a bit scary when you are out on the prairies. Plan carefully and make sure you trust your weather app.
Tips for Thriving on the Road
Stay Flexible
RV life is unpredictable, but that’s part of the adventure. Embrace the unexpected and stay open to new experiences. It is a fine balance between planning and being spontaneous. This may be a skill you need to cultivate. You know, one moment you could be cruising along a beautiful coastline, and the next, you might find yourself rerouting due to a storm. It’s all about rolling with the punches and making the best out of every situation.
Trust me, it’s no fun getting caught in snowstorms or driving through tornado alley, but with the right mindset and tools, such as a reliable weather app, you can navigate these challenges. Remember, each detour brings its own set of unique experiences, and sometimes, those unplanned moments turn into the best memories. So, stay flexible, keep a positive attitude, and enjoy the journey!
Build a Routine
While every day is different, some structure can help you stay grounded. Create a routine for work, relaxation, and self-care. When I sit down to work, I light a candle, connect my phone to the Bluetooth speaker, and make sure I stand up at least every hour. At night, we like to sit outside as the sun is setting, and the air is cooler (in the warmer months).
Connect with the RV Community
Attend RV meetups, join clubs, or connect with other travelers online. The RV community is welcoming and full of people who can offer advice, support, and friendship. We would love to have you join our community @TheLifeWeDesigned.
Keep Learning
There’s always something new to learn about RV life. Improve your driving, find new destinations, or master maintenance–each experience offers growth. Last night, we researched how to store our ladder on the RV. Various groups can provide information, but don’t rely on the first answer. Look at several responses to identify a pattern.
Focus on Gratitude
Living the RV lifestyle is a privilege and an adventure. Take time to reflect on the beauty of the journey and the freedom you’ve created for yourself.
Balancing the Realities of RV Life
Living in an RV has its ups and downs. By finding a balance, you can enjoy a satisfying way of life. Whether you’re boondocking in the desert, staying at a resort, attending a festival, or camping by the river, there are countless opportunities for exploration.
Reflecting on the Journey
As you settle into life on the road, take a moment to reflect on how far you’ve come. Every step of the journey—from dreaming and planning to downsizing and departing—has prepared you for this moment.
Remember, RV life is about more than travel. It’s about creating a life of freedom, adventure, and intention. It’s about living on your terms and finding joy in the journey.
