Part 3 – Introduction to the Series

The dream of full-time RV living is exciting—freedom, adventure, and the chance to escape the 9-5 grind. But transitioning to this lifestyle requires more than just daydreaming. It takes preparation, planning, and hands-on experience to know if it’s the right fit for you.

In this series, “RV Life Without the RV: Your Step-by-Step Guide to Preparing for Full-Time RV Living,” we’re guiding you through the process of preparing for your RV journey—even if you don’t own an RV yet. So far, we’ve explored whether the RV lifestyle is right for you (Part 1) and the mindset shifts needed to leave the 9-5 behind (Part 2).

In Part 3, we’ll dive into practical ways to explore the RV lifestyle before making a big commitment. From renting an RV to connecting with experienced RVers, you’ll learn how to take your dream for a test drive.

Exploring the RV Life Without Owning an RV

You don’t need to own an RV to start experiencing the RV lifestyle. It’s a good idea to “test drive” the lifestyle before making a major investment. This article will show you how to explore RV life, gain valuable insights, and ensure it’s the right choice for you.

Try Before You Buy: Renting an RV

Renting an RV is the best way to experience the lifestyle without a long-term commitment. It allows you to:

  • Get a feel for living in a small space.
  • Learn about the different types of RVs (motorhomes, travel trailers, fifth wheels, etc.).
  • Practice driving, parking, and setting up an RV.

Where to Rent an RV:

  • Peer-to-Peer Platforms: Websites like Outdoorsy and RVshare let you rent directly from RV owners.
  • Rental Companies: Companies like Cruise America offer a wide range of rental options. There are also local businesses you may find in your area.

Disclaimer we have never rented an RV, so I am not recommending one business over another. I wanted to give you some places to start your search.

Tips for First-Time Renters:

  • Start with a short trip close to home to minimize stress.
  • Choose a beginner-friendly RV (smaller models are easier to drive).
  • Ask questions about setup, maintenance, and operation before you hit the road.

Actionable Tip: Research local RV rental options and plan a weekend getaway to see how you enjoy the experience. In some parts of the country, you can have an RV delivered to the campground. This might also be a good option to see if you like being in an RV before you commit to driving one.

Visit RV Shows and Dealerships

RV shows and dealerships are fantastic places to learn about the lifestyle and explore different RV models. You can:

  • Tour various RV layouts to see what fits your needs.
  • Talk to industry experts and experienced RVers.
  • Discover new gear, technology, and tips for RV living.

What to Look For:

  • Size and Layout: Does it feel comfortable? Can you imagine living in it full-time?
  • Features: Think about kitchen space, sleeping arrangements, and storage. If you plan on boondocking, ask if the unit is set up to be off grid for a few days. This could mean a dual refrigerator that works on propane when not plugged in.
  • Budget: Get a sense of the price range for new and used RVs.

Actionable Tip: Find an upcoming RV show near you or visit a local dealership to tour different models.

Join Online RV Communities

The RVing community is one of the most supportive and welcoming groups. Joining these communities is a great way to:

  • Learn from experienced RVers who have already transitioned to full-time life.
  • Get advice on everything from choosing an RV to finding the best campgrounds.
  • Connect with like-minded people who share your dream.

Of course, we recommend you join our community, too, where you will meet those considering RV life so you can grow together. Start at our Instagram @TheLifeWeDesigned.

Where to Connect:

  • Facebook Groups: Search for groups like “Full Time RV Living” or “RV Entrepreneurs.”
  • YouTube Channels: Follow RVers documenting their journey (e.g., Keep Your Daydream, Less Junk More Journey).
  • Forums: Websites like iRV2 and Escapees RV Club offer forums for discussing RV life.

Actionable Tip: Join one RV-focused Facebook group or forum and introduce yourself. Ask questions about how others got started!

Practice Small-Space Living

Even without an RV, you can start preparing for the lifestyle by experimenting with small-space living. This will help you get used to downsizing and adapting to a minimalist lifestyle.

Also, watch our Instagram channel for occasional Minimalist Challenges where we remove at least 465 items from your living space. I can do it from my tiny RV space, so I know you can easily do it from your current home.

Ways to Practice:

  • Spend a weekend in a tiny home or studio Airbnb.
  • Rearrange your current living space to mimic the layout of an RV.
  • Try living with fewer belongings—pack away items you don’t use regularly and see if you miss them.

Actionable Tip: Challenge yourself to live out of one suitcase for a week to simulate RV life.

Start Planning Your First RV Trip

Even if your RV journey is months or years away, planning your first adventure can keep you motivated and excited. Think about:

  • Destinations: Where do you dream of going? National parks, coastal routes, or small towns?
  • Activities: What experiences do you want to prioritize—hiking, fishing, sightseeing, or working remotely?
  • Logistics: Start researching campgrounds, RV parks, and boondocking locations. We found a program where we can camp all year for less than $200 a month. I would be happy to share that with you.

Actionable Tip: Create a travel bucket list of places you want to visit once you start RVing.

Closing: Test Driving Your Dream

Exploring the RV lifestyle before making a big commitment is an empowering way to prepare for your journey. By renting an RV, connecting with the RVing community, and practicing small-space living, you’ll gain the confidence and clarity you need to move closer to your dream.
